JOIN THE FRIENDS OF YELLAGONGA

Do you enjoy walking, cycling or just sitting and admiring the views that are to be found in the Yellagonga Regional Park?

Would you like to put something back into an area you enjoy?

Maybe you have an interest in gardening and feel that you would like to put your “Green Thumb” to good use on a grander scale than can be attained on the suburban block.

Maybe you just enjoy being in the outdoors and fresh air but need an excuse to enjoy yourself outdoors. A bit like fishing without any bait as it appears that you are doing something whilst you are really just chilling out.

FOY have volunteer opportunities for anyone who would like to assist the Group in maintaining and rejuvenating the Park, which is a huge task and will be for years in the future but the existing FOY Volunteers are picking away at it throughout the year and the results can be seen in various areas of the Park which extends from Hepburn Avenue all the way to Burns Beach Road. There are projects all through the Park and it is highly likely you will find a work area reasonably close to your home.

Some of our Volunteers in addition to the regular working bees, suddenly appear at other times, working in their preferred areas, weeding, tidying up and just tending an area, similar to attending their home gardens.

"Green thumbs" are not essential as there are plenty of other tasks carried out in good company with plenty of talk and a real community atmosphere.

However, "green thumbs" are a bit contagious as after a few working bees and a bit of rain you will see great results , which you played a part in and note that your thumb is turning a shade of green.

The Nursery in the grounds of the Landsdale Farm School (which is surrounded by suburbia) is a bit of a surprise,  with Tuesday the main working morning. Other Nursery working days are determined depending on Volunteers availability and work to be done.

Depending on the time of year we are planting out seed trays. When these have germinated and grown into seedlings a short time later, we "pick" the seedlings out into tubes and surprisingly literally thousands of new plants are grown each year ready for planting out in the Park during the wetter months. To view the nursery area in April after a summer's work is a real pleasure. It's a great feeling knowing that you contributed to the new greenery that will soon be part of the Park for many years.

As with all the FOY activities the working parties are actually social occasions where a fair bit of work is done amongst the chatter.

There are no subscriptions or nomination fees as we actually want your help to assist with the ongoing projects. FOY is fortunate that it receives good support, both monetary and physical, from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), Cities of Joondalup and Wanneroo and many other funding areas.

We’ll even give you a green shirt and hat, so that you can be part of the green team. You will also have the opportunity to learn the names of a lot of plants in Latin, if that is your interest.

DEC covers all registered FOY Members under their Insurance Policies.

Isn't it time to assist  us make a difference?
